Do women really cry more than men?

Crying women, abstract painting, Mikulas Galanda, 1938.
Actually, women just have smaller volume tear ducts, meaning that when they cry their tears are more likely to spill down their faces than when men do. So yeah, size does matter in this case.
Sooo cheesy
Salt tears : Crunchy tyrosine crystals found inside slow-aged hard cheeses like Parmesan, that form as proteins break down. Crystals that form on the outside of the cheese come from calcium lactate.

How much?!
On average, humans produce 15 to 30 gallons of tears a year. That’s enough to fill a 12″x12″x24″ fish tank.

Here comes the flood
“Ocular gushers” refers to a cartoon or anime character’s exaggerated tears, giving the impression that they are flowing from a waterfall or even a fire hydrant.
Ocean eyes
Even though your tears may taste briny, they contain only 9,000 ppm of salt, whereas seawater has 35,000 ppm. That’s why your eyes burn if you open them in the ocean.

Make it quick
With its rounded nose at the front that tapers to a pointy shape in the back, the teardrop is believed to be the most aerodynamic shape. Its unique geometry enables air to flow around with particularly low resistance making it ideal for designing aircraft wings, bicycle helmets, and camping trailers.

Get an eyeful
Italian artist Francesco Vezzoli often uses tears in his artwork, which he feels are underrepresented in the history of art. You can take a peek at his 2024 Musei delle Lacrime (Museums of Tears) exhibition here.
Season to taste
London’s Hoxton Street Monster Supplies offers a genius line of seasoned salts with the best names. Our favorite has to be the one made with harvested tears “Shed While Homeschooling”. Obviously, visiting their boutique is now high up on my bucket list.

Chop chop

Onions from Album Benary (1876-1886) by Ernst Benary, Biodiversity Heritage Library
Bayer (yep, the pharmaceutical multinational) started developing a low “lachrymatory factor” onion in the late 80’s and came up with a tearless version of the bulbous veggie, now sold under the brand name Sunions.
Don’t shed no tears

We bet you didn’t know that even though newborn babies may cry a lot, their tear ducts are still developing after birth and they don’t produce actual tears until they are seven or eight months old!
